Olay Eyes Illuminating Eye Cream For Dark Circles

Earlier this year Olay released a collection of three targeted treatments for the eyes. The range was created to treat everyday eye concerns a lot of us tend to have. Pictured below are the Pro-Retinol Eye Treatment for deep wrinkles and the Illuminating Eye Cream. I bought two of the three, I didn’t bother with the one that comes in a jar. Today we’re taking an in depth look at the Illuminating Eye Cream for dark circles.

Price

rrp $48.99 AUD / $26.99 USD

Packaging

15ml / 0.5 fl oz. Clear plastic outer, silver cardboard insert holds the plastic bottle in place. The bottle features a pump dispenser. Have you ever noticed how Olay products always look amazing in the box and promos but when you open them they look really cheap ?

Appearance and Texture

Lightweight gel/cream, dual swirl formula, it looks a bit like to a DNA helix with gold coloured light-reflecting pigments.

Directions

For AM and PM use. Apply to clean skin. Dispense approximately 1/2 a pump per eye. I pump 2 drops onto the back of my hand and then gently pat and smooth it around the entire eye including the eyelids, up to the brow bone and outer corners until completely absorbed. Follow with an SPF.

Less is more

Promises and Claims

Reduces the look of dark circles within 2 weeks. Instantly helps to de-circle tired looking eyes. The light-reflecting pigments deflect light from the eyes for a smoother more radiant skin tone. Hydrates and nourishes with a luminous glow.

Key Ingredients

Niacinamide : Vitamin B3. Antioxidant, cell-communicating ingredient. Research indicates it Niacinamide can help reduce the appearance of fine lines/wrinkles, improve elasticity, tone and texture. Olay love vitamin B3 so much they include it in most of their products.

Acetyl Glucosamine : Skin identical and skin repairing. The majority of research into this ingredient was conducted by the manufacturer of Olay, Procter & Gamble and Estée Lauder which coincidentally also use this in their products. Research by P & G some of which was in vitro has demonstrated the importance of acetyl glucosamine and its ability to help lighten skin when combined with niacinamide.

Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 : Anti-aging ingredient best known by its trade name Matrixyl. Benefits include improving the look of fine lines and wrinkles. There is, however no research to indicate that it will diminish dark circles.

Vitamins E and Vitamin B5 : Tocopherol Acetate acts as an antioxidant and Panthenol (B5) as a humectant, it attracts and holds on to moisture improving barrier function.

Titanium Dioxide and Mica : light-reflecting mineral pigments that give this eye cream its shimmery appearance or ‘luminous glow’. You’ll find both these ingredients in lots of other cosmetics and skincare that promise a radiant glowing complexion; eyeshadows, highlighters, blush, foundation.

What I liked

• I found it effective at helping to soften and smooth the look of fine lines. Although you’d absolutely achieve the same results with most well formulated moisturisers on the market.

• I loved the lightweight serum texture. It’s my preferred texture when it comes to eye cream. It’s oil-free so if you’re very dry/flakey around the eyes you won’t find this cream hydrating enough.

• Fast Absorbing, it works great under concealer.

• Fragrance-Free suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers should have no issues.

What I didn’t like

• There was no visible reduction of dark circles as claimed on the packaging just a temporary brightening effect from the mica and titanium dioxide.

• The price is rather expensive for what essentially is a minuscule 15ml of moisturiser. I wasn’t prepared to pay full price. I waited for this to go on sale. I paid $24.50 at Coles which is half off and a few $$ less than the rrp in the US. Interestingly, I see Olay Eyes on sale frequently, almost every few weeks. I’m guessing most people aren’t buying this at full price and I don’t blame them.

In Conclusion

Best keep your expectations realistic and low with Olay Eyes. Dark circles happen for many reasons and unfortunately no eye cream regardless of marketing claims will erase the problem. Sun damage can be a major cause, along with genes which are sadly out of your control. Research into the topical application of Niacinamide and N-acetyl glucosamine on hyperpigmentation may be very promising but of little help if the damage is already present on the skin. Short of praying to the genetic gods to be kind, what you can do is be diligent with applying broad spectrum SPF 30+ daily, wear sunglasses and wait patiently until they invent something that actually works.

Chemist Warehouse 1/2 Off Sale Haul

With list in hand on Monday I braved day one of the Chemist Warehouse 1/2 off* Sale. Everything I picked up was on either 50% off or reduced in price also so proud of myself as I managed to keep the total under $100.

John Frieda Colour Refreshing Gloss Cool Brunette $10.69 I coloured my hair just last week. My semi-permanent colour tends to fade rather quickly. I’m a frequent hair washer; every few days so I keep this on standby to keep my colour fresh. I love how soft this treatment leaves my hair. Find out more about why I like this product in my review Here

Revitanail 2-Step Revival Kit $21.99 My nails are in desperate need of some TLC as the weather begins to drop and we head into Winter. I’m hoping this kit delivers healthier and stronger nails. It contains a bottle of both Intensive Nail Strengthener and Nourishing Oil. I was initially going to buy the Strengthener on its own but spotted this duo on my way to the checkout. It seemed like better value.

Ego QV Face Oil Free Moisturiser 75g $13.69 Well formulated oil-free moisturisers are so hard to come by at the drugstore. This one from Ego QV Face promises to minimise shine and provide a light matte finish. It contains witch hazel and nicinamide. It ticks a lot of the boxes for what I look for when choosing a moisturiser. I’m excited to try this.

Revlon HD Matte Lip Colour in Devotion $11.69 5.9ml This is Revlon’s first matte liquid lipstick range. I wasn’t sure which shade to pick. None of the colours are really stood out to me so I opted for something safe with this vintage rose shade called Devotion.

La Roche Posay Serozinc 150ml $19.99 This is my third can of Serozinc it’s a backup for my second can which is about to run out. Find out how and why I love using this multi-tasker in my skincare routine Here

L’Oreal Le Flash Manicure Remover 75ml $6.47 my nail kit essential; I’m kicking myself for not grabbing a few more of these. It’s the Fastest. Remover. Ever. The gentle moisturising formula is acetone-free. Love it. Might go back to for a couple more!

Rimmel Kate Sculpting Palette in 002 Coral Glow $8.48 18.5g Designed by Kate Moss; it’s Rimmel’s very first contour kit containing a shimmer powder to highlight, shading powder to contour/sculpt and powder blush in peachy coral to define and colour your cheeks. First impressions: packaging is a super flimsy also not entirely sure the contour is matte enough. I detected a tiny bit of shimmer in the contour shade but for around $8 I’m not really fussed if this palette turns out to be a dud.

Have you been to the Chemist Warehouse 1/2 Off Sale, what did you buy ?

*1/2 off Rimmel, L’Oreal, Revlon, Maybelline, Sally Hansen. On sale until 26/5.

OPI New Orleans Collection

Jambalayettes Mini Nail Lacquers set features:

“Spicy little bites of colour from the New Orleans Collection.”

4 x 3.75ml / 0.125 fl. oz.

Price: AU$ 17.46 on sale from David Jones rrp $24.95. Full size bottles $19.95 for 15ml

Got Myself into a Jam-balaya “A yummy melange of spice and creamy peach.” A lovely coral for Spring/Summer this colour looks amazing on darker skin tones. It’s more subtle on my paler skin and in real life than it appears in the photo. A really pretty peach creme colour. Fully opaque in 3-4 coats. I really struggled to get this shade to apply evenly. A good top coat helped even it out slightly.

Take a Right on Bourbon “An intoxicatingly warm, metallic pewter.” I’m wearing 2 coats without top coat. This shade was easy to apply it just glided on. It’s a gorgeous metallic shade not as streaky as the other shades in this pack. My pick of of the pack, this is my favourite shade out of the four.

I’m Sooo Swamped! “This verdant, creamy green is drenched in style.” I wasn’t sure about this grassy green shade at first. I’ve applied 3 coats to achieve a full opaque coverage plus top coat. This colour is the perfect colour for a fun weekend mani. Not an everyday colour.

Show Us Your Tips! “Let’s see how this periwinkle shimmer looks on you” A very sheer formula for this purple/grey with silver shimmer. I’m wearing 4 coats plus a top coat and as you may notice in the swatch it was still streaky on my pinky finger. You might need up to 6 coats to achieve full opacity with this colour. Great colour, disappointing formula.

Milk Makeup Charcoal Cleanser Review

Hi Everyone

Hope you’re doing well! Today’s skincare post will focus on a new brand from the USA called Milk Makeup. Using the highest quality ingredients and minimal preservatives; the Milk Makeup range contains lip, face, eye, skincare and haircare products with the focus being on high concept, low maintenance beauty for everyone. I purchased the Milk Makeup Charcoal Cleanser online from Urban Outfitters last month. It retails for US$28 for a 4.5oz/135gram tube.

Product Claims

<Daily cleanser detoxifies, purifies, and invigorates. Made with charcoal powder from ubame oak trees that absorbs oil and harmful toxins. Marine water and vitamin E balance moisture levels for soft and smooth skin.>

Directions: Lather a small 10c (dime size) amount between hands with warm water. Massage all over face to cleanse. Rinse well. Follow with toner, moisturiser and other skincare.

My Thoughts

In the short time I’ve been using this cleanser, I’ve found it to be a very gentle yet effective way to cleanse my face after I’ve removed my makeup. The smooth gel formula foams easily with warm water. It contains a tiny amount of mild fragrance. It didn’t irritate my eyes and most importantly it didn’t make my skin feel stripped or tight after rinsing; just really soft, smooth and clean. Also worth noting Milk Makeup Charcoal Cleanser is :

*Paraben Free ✔️

*Gluten Free ✔️

*Vegan ✔️

In summary this cleanser is great for all skin types in particular oily/combination types. Have you tried Milk Makeup skincare yet?

Marie Claire Ageless Parcel Autumn Edit

Hello Everyone

Hope you’re well ! After missing out on Marie Claire’s Ageless Summer Edit last season I was adamant I was not going to miss out on the Autumn Edit Parcel. I promptly signed up to be notified and snapped one up for myself when it became available.

I received the Autumn Edit of the Marie Claire Ageless Parcel about a week and a half ago so I thought I’d share some thoughts on its contents with you.

The Parcel contains a mix of 6 anti-ageing skincare products (high-end and drugstore) for AU$25

*Elizabeth Arden Pro Triple Action Protector 15ml

First up is a high end product; from Elizabeth Arden’s Pro Range. This lotion is best described as a tinted moisturiser with some anti-ageing benefits & antioxidants. It provides 3 levels of protection hence Triple Action in its name. It contains less irritating physical sunscreen in the forms titanium and zinc oxides. The label doesn’t specify how much SPF I think it’s an SPF 50. It feels light and not too greasy. It would be a product I’d wear on its own when I’m having a rare good skin day. I tried a little on my hand just to check the consistency and colour. Elizabeth Arden call it a ‘universal tint’. Once applied the tint disappears leaving a hint of colour meaning this is suitable for all (most) skin tones. I’ve not used a tinted moisturizer in a very long time the last one I used was by Ponds, it wasn’t the best. I’m excited to see how this one from Elizabeth Arden Pro fares.

*Tresseme Youth Boost Fullness Emulsion Spray (full size) 125ml $10.99

Anti-ageing products for your hair ? Yep they’re a thing ! Your hair does in fact change as you age, it gets drier, loses volume and goes flat. The Youth Boost Emulsion spray from Tresseme contains omega 3s and some antioxidants to help restore fullness and plump hair. Since receiving the parcel I have been using this spray and I am enjoying it. It has left my hair very soft and more manageable prior to blow drying. It can also be used on dry hair to give extra fullness and volume to your hair.

*Garnier Skin Naturals Miracle Sleeping Cream (full size)50ml $19.99

The commercial for this product from Garnier has been flooding the airwaves in Australia a lot recently. What’s all the hype about ? It’s a night cream containing 7 anti-ageing actives said to be as potent and intense as a face mask and fights signs of ageing and fatigue. It contains LHA, hyaluronic acid, jojoba oil and pure lavender essential oil. Unfortunately this rich night cream this isn’t suitable for my skin type. I’ve had many breakouts and irritations from using “essential oils” in the past so I’m not going to risk it. This would be great for a very dry type skin. I’ll be passing it on to family.

*Essano Rosehip Collagen Repair Serum (full size) 30ml $29.99

I’m not familiar with the Essano brand. Essano is a vegan skincare brand made in New Zealand available at Coles Supermarket. It’s an intensive serum containing 93.3 % naturally derived ingredients with no nasty petrochemical and parabens. The Ingredient list includes certified organic Rosehip oil, vitamins b3, b5, E, sunflower seed oil, jojoba seed oil, blackberry leaf extract, lactic acid, aloe vera leaf juice amongst other things to plump/fill wrinkles, improve firmness, revive skin, resurface & tighten pores and refines skin texture. This intensive serum is suitable for all skin types. I tried a bit on my hand it didn’t feel too greasy and absorbed very quickly. The box has a lot of information on it. If you’re an eco conscious natural beauty lover you’d absolutely dig this drugstore brand. I’m positive I’ll find a way to incorporate a serum into my autumn/winter routine when I sometimes get dry patches.

*Elucent Whitening Hand Cream (full size) 50g $24.99

On to some hand cream from Elucent; this brand is manufactured in Australia by ego pharmaceuticals. I’ve not tried the Elucent Whitening range before. I know the ego brand and have used and loved many of their products. The Elucent whitening range is designed to moisturise, protect, brighten hands, even out skin tone and reduce the appearance of dark spots. It contains vitamins B3, E, C, safflower seed oil, lactic acid. I don’t have any dark spots or unevenness on my hands currently but I won’t say no to new hand cream. I’ll be using this to prevent dark spots/unevenness from forming. It’s a lovely, non-greasy hand cream that absorbs very quickly.

*Lonvitalite C8 Collagen Crystal Eye Mask 1 pair

Lonvitalite is a familiar brand not because I regularly buy it but familiar because Marie Claire included 2 sheet masks from Lonvitalite in their Summer Edit (regular parcel) and I have received these in other beauty boxes in the past. Still haven’t used those from the Summer box. I tend to put them aside for later use and I’ve accumulated a few recently. These ones are gel type collagen crystal eye masks shaped like a crescent. They target dark circles and fine lines. They contain plant based collagen, panthenol, Co Enzyme Q10, yeast beta-glutan to promote even tone and a brighter under eye area. There aren’t any instructions on the sachet telling me how long to leave the eye mask on. I’m guessing 10-15 minutes. The masks have an unopened shelf life of 3 years. I’m sure I will eventually get around to using these during the year.

Mountain Lotus Organic Hemp Lip Balm

Hello Everyone

Today I’m reviewing Mountain Lotus Organic Hemp lip balm from my Secrets Organic Subscription Box

*15ml tin

Contains Hemp oil, olive oil, coconut oil, beeswax, mandarin essential oil, Patchouli essential oil, vitamin E oil.

All ingredients are organic with no hidden nasties.

Made in Australia from Australian ingredients.

I’ve not heard of the Lotus Mountain brand before so I was interested to try this lip balm. I could smell and taste the mandarin/ patchouli essential oil blend. Fragrant essential oils are one of the reasons I steer clear of organic/natural skincare lines. I didn’t like the taste however this does do a really good job of nourishing dry flakey lips and keeping them smooth. A warning make sure you keep it in the fridge in Summer with the lid tightly closed it’s 100% oil and melts as soon as you touch it. Would I repurchase this? No I wouldn’t, this left a bad taste in my mouth 😦

*not suitable for vegans due to the inclusion of beeswax.

RRP AU$5

Spring Summer Lips

Hello Everyone Today I’m sharing my top 5 Spring/Summer must have lipsticks. I’ve tried to include something for everyone whether you’re dark or light skinned, are vegan, into cruelty free products and of course some drugstore options.

The Nudes

An old faithful the Maybelline New York Colordrama Intense Velvet lip pencil in 630 Nude Perfection is well known for being a dupe for MAC Velvet Teddy. This suits most skin tones, it’s my go-to when I can’t decide what lipstick to wear. Rrp AU$9.95 available at most drugstores, supermarkets, Target, Priceline stores.

An option for darker skin tones: Rimmel Kate New Season Nudes number 48. The formula is creamy and long wearing in Rimmel’s Lasting Finish formula. It reminds me a little of Colorpop Cosmetics “Grunge” lippiestix. It actually looks amazing on light, medium and dark skins. It’s my pick of the 5 shades. Also worth checking out are 42, 43 and 45 if you prefer a pinkish nude over a caramel nude. Rimmel is available at most supermarkets and drugstores, Priceline and Target stores RRP AU$12.95.

The Pinks

Australis Velourlips Matte Lip Cream (CF/V) in Bae-jing. Australis Cosmetics recently released 5 new Velourlips shades for SS16. If you’re looking for a long wearing matte lip colour this maybe an option. Bae-jjng is a darker pink/mauve shade. Best application is obtained when lips are exfoliated with a sugar scrub before application. Some also find applying a tiny amount of lip balm as a primer helps with the comfort factor. See swatch below. Rrp AU$10.49 from Priceline, online and some Kmart stores. http://www.australiscosmetics.com.au
NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick (CF) in Tea & Cookies is a lovely muted mid pink. The Liquid Suede collection really surprised me. I must disclose these are not matte as advertised in the media but very creamy and high in pigment. They are comfortable and long wearing. I love this shade. Sadly still no release date for Australia. RRP US $7 on http://www.nyxcosmetics.com and Ulta. I bought mine from eBay. I think they are well worth hunting down if you love a cream finish lipstick.

Lastly a new indie lipstick brand I found on Instagram called Necromancy Cosmetica (CF/V) Des and Zyl hand craft their cruelty free matte lipsticks in Puerto Rico. There are currently 13 matte shades in their collection. My pick for spring is Specter. Super long wearing very high in pigment and comfortable on the lips. A dusty pink it suits most light/medium skin tones. *Swatch was taken with flash on. Also worth checking out Lesstrange, Witches Brew and .RRP US$16. I purchased mine from http://www.beserk.com.au for around $24. More info can be found at: http://www.necromancy.cosmetica.com

*CF=Cruelty Free

*V= Vegan

Halloween Swap 2015

Hello Everyone

Hope you’re all doing well. Today I have different kind of blog post to share. Something I’ve NEVER done before…A Halloween Swap.

I was approached by Brontie from @xobrontie on Instagram in early September to do this and with some apprehension I said…Yes !

We set a $50 budget excluding postage to be sent by 19th October. See below what I received.

*Chi Chi Cosmetics nail polishes in Get off my Runway (pink) and Get out of my Spotlight (purple)

*Revlon Colorstay nail enamel in Jungle

*She Nail Lacquer in Casting a Spell

*nyx cosmetics eyeshadow in Gumdrop

*LA Colors 12 color Eyeshadow Palette in Traditional

*a nail file

*MOR Hand Cream in Snow Gardenia

*chocolate vampire fangs and fizzer candy.

Some nail swatches below. I didn’t swatch all the polishes. I don’t own a lot of Chi Chi polish. The salon formulas give an opaque mani in 2 – 3 coats. I really like the purple polish of the two I received. The pink isn’t my thing but still made an effort to swatch it. I also did a Moroccan summer themed mani with a stencil I got from @whatsupnails and added a glitter accent with the She Polish on my pinkie finger. Might save the Revlon Colorstay Jungle polish for Autumn/Winter.

The MOR Snow Gardenia hand cream smells amazing ! and very nourishing on dry hands you only need a tiny amount. I’m a big fan of MOR so was very happy to receive this.

NYX Cosmetics Gumdrop eyeshadow single, a shimmery pale pink. It’s tiny and cute. I’d use this as a lid colour. I don’t use a lot of eyeshadow but will definitely try this in Summer.

Lastly the LA Colors 12 Colour Eyeshadow Palette: Traditional Colours. These are neutral/nude brown type tones. They have a silky texture, however they are also heavily fragranced 😦 bad news for sensitive eyes. Love the colours, hate putting perfumed cosmetics near my eyes. I may pass this on to a friend.
